1. Bulk First
A successful cut starts before you reduce your calories. By bulking over a long enough period of time and building an appropriate amount of muscle, a cut will typically be more effective since you’ve already built up a foundation for the body composition you want to build. Your results will often come faster — and last longer — when you go into a caloric surplus for a number of months before starting a deficit. By adding and then subtracting in “seasons”, you can build a lean physique you love without the frustration of trying to do everything at once!
2. Don’t slash your calories overnight
With a clear goal in mind, it’s tempting to push toward it with everything you’ve got… but your body needs time to adapt to changes in nutrition. If you rapidly decrease your caloric intake, your body can’t adapt effectively and a cut won’t be as effective. By decreasing your macros slightly every couple weeks, you can give your body enough time to adjust and work with you instead of against you. It will take longer to get to your desired macro numbers, but the effect on your energy and physique will happen faster and more reliably.
3. Don’t decrease everything uniformly
It’s easy to think that in a cut, your calories should drop across the board. But if you’ve been working hard to build a lean, toned physique you love, a uniform cut across all macros will work against you! Your carbs and fats will decrease, but in order to preserve your progress, your protein intake needs to remain relatively unchanged as this will determine how effectively your muscles are able to recover and grow. Muscle consists of active tissue, and protein is essential to keep it thriving and happy so that you keep what you built leading into your cut!
